Chloroquine side effect rates

I learned that I could not find many studies about the rate of the side effects for the various forms of chloroquine. See the link below on drugs.com which has links to some reference studies. Due to some of the side effects, chloroquine might only be given to very sick people who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Some more side effects of chloroquine, a possible treatment for coronavirus, are here: https://www.drugs.com/sfx/chloroquine-side-effects.html

If you have any of these side effects, which may indicate an overdose, see a doctor immediately:

  • Cold, clammy skin
  • decreased urine
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • fast, weak pulse
  • increased thirst
  • lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
  • loss of appetite
  • muscle pain or cramps
  • numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or lips

And some more side effects:

  • Irreversible retinal damage has been reported in patients receiving long-term or high-dose 4-aminoquinoline therapy.
  • Rare (less than 0.1%): Exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, similar desquamation-type events (including moist desquamation).
  • Rare (less than 0.1%): Hypotension, cardiomyopathy, electrocardiographic change (particularly, inversion or depression of the T-wave with widening of the QRS complex).

From Wikipedia

  • Beware, Wikipedia is VERY biased.
  • Chloroquine-induced itching is very common among black Africans (70%), but much less common in other races. It increases with age, and is so severe as to stop compliance with drug therapy.
  • Eye damage may be irreversible.
  • Hard damage like congestive heart failure, may be irreversible.
  • No evidence chloroquine is safe for people age 65 and older.
  • Drug interactions with ampicillin, antacids, cimetidine, cyclosporine, kaolin, mefloquine.
  • Chloroquine inhibits thiamine intake.

There are more and more doctors treating with hydroxycholoroquine with 100% success rate. There is one doctor in New York, and another Dr Stella Immanuel. No side effects have been reported.
