Red blood cells in the body are used to carry oxygen to various parts of the body. Red blood cells contain a hemoglobin molecule, which contains an iron atom. (Iron bonds very well to oxygen in water to form rust, called iron oxide.) This hemoglobin is what carries the oxygen. With malaria, malaria unbinds hemoglobin from the red blood cell so the person loses oxygen, and this results in the person gasping for breath. There are no longer enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to all parts of the body. This is why doctors at first though people with COVID-19 might need a ventilator. It turns out ventilators can do more harm than good.
COVID-19 also acts just like malaria and unbinds hemoglobin from red blood cells. HCQ prevents red blood cells from losing their hemoglobin so the person can get enough oxygen to all tissues, and recover using their immune system. HCQ is used to treat both malaria and COVID-19 with great success.
