Here are some tips for staying safe on the internet.
- Never give a site your real name, address or phone number.
- Never use your real name in your email address or as part of your username on any site.
- Never use your birth date or year in your email address, your username, or anywhere else online.
- Do not use a website’s app unless you really have to. They can be used as a back door by the site owners, or hacked by hackers to access your computer, phone or tablet. The could then find out your real name and address, or passwords, or bank account numbers, or simply delete your data.
General PC safety
- Install an anti-Malware software package like Malware Bytes to protect from trojans, viruses, and bad websites.
- Back up important data to a flash drive or external hard drive via USB. A USB hard drive is very easy to use with your next new computer. When backing up data from a cell phone or tablet you may need a flash drive that supports On The Go (OTG) or an OTG adapter. Normal USB drives may not work with tablets or cell phones.
